Human voice is an expression and a mirror of its owner's person (lat. personare = sound through). Psychoanalyst Theodor Reik thought that the voice being interpreted by the unconciounsess as some kind of substitute concept of sexual power. By coining the phrasing »The grain of voice«, philosopher Roland Barthes emphasized how the singing voice is connected to body and personality. Author Elias Canetti spoke about voice as an »acoustic mask« the person can hide behind.
YIELD's »Voice of Newroses« deals with the theories of Paul J. Moses (1897 – 1965), put down in his work »The Voice of Neurosis« (1945). Moses, a clinical professor in charge of the Speech and Voice Section, Division of Otolaryngology at the Stanford University San Francisco, did research into the psychology of the human voice: How are personality traits, neuroses and symptoms of mental disorders evident in vocal tone, pitch, range, prosody and timbre of a voice?
For Hörkunstfestival 2011 in Nuremberg, Martyn Schmidt did a one-time performance under the project name YIELD. »Voice of Newroses« was improvised solo on a theatre's stage, solely using voice and effects and a loopstation. Aereal drones, noise, distorted sounds of voice and mouth-driven rhythms: The live-recordings of »Voice of Newroses« capture a moire of multicoloured shades of voices. Psychophonetic tracks of sound meet neurotic noise and soundpathologic recoil and feedback. A Histery of loops, sound-psychedelic, uncer-taint-ies and unclear reactions come upon over-adaption and error pulses, re-pointed in a permanently new constructed occurence of sound. A noisy, raucous, sometimes grainy, sometimes droney soundscape – with the effect-devices overlaying the tracks like emotional interferences.
Poet and soundartist Martyn Schmidt is running the label atemwerft. Voice,breath and sound are pivotal motifs in his work. 2019 he has been curating Augsburgs World Voice Day. Schmidt is admin Facebook-Group »Vocal Cords – Arts & phenomena of the voice«. YIELD is a project, exploring voice and noise.

Die menschliche Stimme – sie ist Ausdruck und Spiegel der Person (lat. personare = durchklingen). Der Psychoanalytiker Theodor Reik meinte, sie werde »vom Unbewussten als eine Art Ersatzvorstellung sexueller Kraft gedeutet«, der Philosoph Roland Barthes betonte mit seiner Formulierung »Körnung der Stimme« die individuelle Körper- und Persongebundenheit der (Sing)-Stimme und der Schriftsteller Elias Canetti sprach davon, man könne den Klang der Stimme manipulativ wie eine »akustische Masken« vor (oder in) sich hertragen.
»Voice of Newroses« beschäftigt sich mit der Deutung von Paul J. Moses (1897 – 1965). Der amerikanische Psychoanalytiker bereitete in den 50er-Jahren mit seinem Werk »The Voice of Neurosis« (1954) einer psychophonetischen Stimmanalyse den Weg in Medizin und Psychiatrie. Bestimmte Eigenschaften der Stimme sollen eine Krankheitsdiagnose erlauben: Psychose, Hysterie, Neurose?
Unter dem Projektnamen YIELD führte Martyn Schmidt für das Hörkunstfestial 2011 in Nürnberg einmalig die Live-Stimmperformance „Voice of Newroses« auf. Auf der Bühne des Theaters Salz und Pfeffer improvisierte der Dichter und Soundartist neun Tracks, die klanglich allein auf der menschlischen Stimme beruhen. Allein auf der Bühne, unterstützt von Multieffektgeräten und Loopstation, schuf er so eine Soundcollage aus flächigen Drones, verfremdeten Stimmklängen und Mund-Rhythmen.
Die Liveaufnahmen auf »Voice of Newroses« fangen ein Moiree aus Stimmfarben ein. Ganz im Sinne des Titels von Paul J. Moses' Werk »The Voice of Neurosis« treffen psychophonetische Tonspuren auf die Störmuster aus neurotischen Noise und soundpatholgischem Feedback. Loophysterie, Klang-Psychedelic, Unsicherheiten, unklare Reaktionen treffen auf Überadaption und neu um- und ins Klanggeschehen rückgedeutete Fehlimpulse. Ein lärmender, noisiger, mal körniger, ab und an droneähnlicher Soundteppich, bei dem Effektgeräte die Tracks gleich emotionalen Interferenzen über- und unterlagern.
Der Dichter und Soundartist Martyn Schmidt betreibt das Vocal Poetry Label atemwerft. Stimme, Atem und Klang bilden immer wieder zentrale Motive seiner Arbeiten. 2019 kuratierte er den Augsburger Welttag der Stimme. Schmidt ist Admin der Facebook-Gruppe »Vocal Cords – Arts & phenomena of the voice«. YIELD ist ein Projekt, bei dem Schmidt sich mit Stimme und Noise beschäftigt.
