Written by Hugo Ball. Performed for the first time @ »Cabaret Voltaire« in Zurich in June 1916.
Das Gedicht hatte Ball jedoch nur unvollständig in seinen Aufzeichnungen niedergeschrieben und vermutlich am Abend improvisiert.
»Die schweren Vokalreihen und der schleppende Rhythmus der Elefanten hatten eben noch eine letzte Steigerung erlaubt. Wie sollte ich's zu Ende führen? Da bemerkte ich, dass meine Stimme jenen Stil des Meßgesangs annahm, wie er durch die katholischen Kirchen des Morgen- und Abendlandes wehklagt.«
