Gerald Fiebig: electrOMyogrAphy (vanishing ceaselessly)

from Vocology #01: »Phonosurgery« by V.A. // A 100th jubilee tribute to Godfrey Edward Arnold

" 'An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated by muscle cells when these cells are electrically or neurologically activated' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromyography), a method used by Godfrey Edward Arnold for diagnosing laryngeal problems. Much like the wave-form diagrams of digital audio recordings, electromyography is a method of visualising the human voice not in its meaning (that’s what writing does), but in its fleeting materiality. Thus, I based this track on an 'electrophonogram’ (a recording) of me performing my piece 'MeditAtiOn on Duration (Part II: Vanishing)' by surgically removing the pauses specified by the original score."

Gerald Fiebig (b. 1973) is a poet and audio artist based in Augsburg, Germany. He also performs and records as Sustained Development and with Jesus Jackson und die grenzlandreiter and helps run the experimental music label attenuation circuit. Fiebig regularly performed with sample poet Martyn Schmidt, who now runs the Atemwerft label, from 2005 and 2007, which was a formative experience for his work with sound. He has since branched out into working with sound installations and radio. His audio work was recognised with a TONSPUR artist-in-residence grant from quartier21/MuseumsQuartier Vienna in 2013. His piece “Identification de substances”, co-composed with Gerhard Zander, was shortlisted for the award of the Institut de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges in 2007.
